Once luggage clears the scanners, the last new step is for passengers to place their bins into the automated return system that keeps the front of the lane constantly stocked.

Karoly said there is a bit of a learning curve with the new system, but at least one security officer will always be posted at the front of the lane to assist passengers.

So far, 92 automated lanes have been installed around the country. In addition to the automated lanes, TSA is testing new scanners that use computerized tomography to view carry-on bags.
