This band truly represents real D. RdGldGrn honorably pays homage to this genre by bringing it to the modern age and adding more styles and influences to it, much like the original go-go style did for funk. This band is a huge hit with the surrounding DMV area and should be considered a staple in many of the local festivals and shows held in the area.

Being from the east coast we can appreciate that. The ones on the east coast stand out for their own reasons. SR: When I was doing some research on you guys I saw you had a new way you were going about releasing your new album — crowdfunding. Talk a little bit about that. What was your motivation behind it. Well our first introduction into the world was through the major-labels system. We were on Universal Records, and that was part of Republic Records.

We had a mixed experience with that. We started to realize what happened and that led us to taking control of the situation. I mean the first three or four weeks of the campaign it was nearly percent funded. That was incredible to see.

One of which, most importantly, is the label that is going to make all this possible. That will be how all of the stuff gets done. You can still do it in-house by yourself if you have the right avenues and skills. What does it mean for them to help influence you and your work?

We were clearly already influenced by those two. The same for Pharell. We worked in a different environment than we were working with Dave. He was working with Logic as opposed to ProTools. We were programming the beat with him as opposed to being inside the big studio recording with big guitars and drums.

It was refreshing to see that he makes music the way we make music. Details are murky. Blue, on the other hand, tells a different story.

Just four months after playing their last show as The Five One, the band went into hibernation—sans Blue—and bided their time. After going through the rough patch, the guys felt like the band needed a makeover.

Instead of functioning like a storage cloud for song drafts, the platform made everything visible to users, and contrary to what they assumed, nothing the band uploaded was private. Three hours after posting the track, the clicks came, buzz swelled and the band was back in the game, whether they wanted to be or not.

In that three hours, a blogger picked up the scent. While the band slept, he typed. Something about their sound sounded … a lot like this one band that I fell in love with earlier this year: The Five One. Only one indie-hipster-rap band has a roster appropriate enough to be able to say that. And although their first single dropped without the pomp and circumstance they had hoped for, it garnered attention from some seriously big names.

Then, Augunas dropped a bomb on the group: Dave Grohl , Arlington native, Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighters lead singer and all around musical legend, heard their work, liked it and wanted to play drums on their new EP. Needless to say, the guys were ecstatic.

Grohl was in the studio setting up. The first thing the band saw when they stepped into the studio was a monster spread of food. That guy was a Foo Fighters fan , too. The word "supergroup" was coined in to describe the band Cream. However, since then, it's become winky shorthand to describe a group of accomplished musicians more interested in goofing off with their equally talented friends than creating anything memorable.

The reunion, a unique talent constellation that also featured Beck , St. Vincent and Grohl's daughter Violet rounding out the band, was part of the 13th year of the HEAVEN gala , a fundraiser for The Art Of Elysium , a charity that brings music and visual arts to hospitals and homeless- and poverty-affected areas across Los Angeles.

But while other artists like L7, Marilyn Manson and Cheap Trick also performed on the stage, which was outfitted with a background meant to evoke the iconic New York punk venue CBGB, it was this newly formed incarnation of Nirvana that proved to be the main attraction. The absence of their former frontman was noted by Novoselic, a founding member of Nirvana, who requested a "cheer from the crowd for Kurt Cobain. Vincent, for the task, given that her innovative guitar work serves as the highlight of her live shows and regularly lands her on male-dominated Best Guitarist lists.
